Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

Welcome to Sunset Cliffs Natural Park!

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park (SCNP) is a 68-acre City of San Diego regional park which extends 1½ miles along the Point Loma peninsula's western shoreline. This unique coastal environment features expansive ocean views, dramatic cliff formations and caves, a fascinating intertidal area, and native coastal sage scrub habitat which provides connectivity to the adjacent Point Loma Ecological Reserve. Sunset Cliffs has long served as an attraction for San Diego residents as well as national and international visitors.

The 18-acre Linear Section extends from Adair Street on the north to Ladera Street on the south and is bordered on the east by Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. The fifty acre Hillside Section extends from Ladera Street south to the Navy property and is bordered by Point Loma Nazarene University on the east.

The Hillside Section can be accessed at the corner of Ladera Street and Cornish Drive or through the Lomaland entrance from Catalina Boulevard.

Vision Statement

"Create a park where people can enjoy San Diego's natural coastal environment as it once was, free from the effects of man and intended to inspire the user to reflect on the grandeur of the sea, and the beauty of the cliffs that was once Point Loma."

The City of San Diego contracted with Van Dyke and Associates to draft the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park Master Plan. Through many years of broad based input and numerous well attended community meetings, the majority of the community consistently supported the concept of a natural, open space coastal park. A major goal of the master plan is the development of a comprehensive drainage plan which will reduce unnecessary erosion and the loss of irreplaceable parkland. The master plan focuses on restoration, preservation, and improving public access. Following completion of the master plan, a Master Environmental Impact Review (MEIR) reviewed the plan from an environmental perspective.
The City of San Diego's extensive public approval process included formal approval of the master plan by the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park Council, the Coastal Area Committee of the San Diego Park and Recreation Board, the San Diego Park and Recreation Board, the City of San Diego's Design Review Committee, the San Diego Planning Commission and the San Diego City Council. The final step was approval by the California Coastal Commission in 2005. The vision statement for the Park states: “Create a Park where people can enjoy San Diego's natural coastal environment as it once was, free from the effects of man and intended to inspire the user to reflect on the grandeur of the sea, and the beauty of the cliffs that are Point Loma.”
